Cake Maker Started from Scratch

As a child, Phyllis Cano often went to Woolworth’s on 16th Street to watch the decorating lady demonstrate her skill. “She fascinated me. I’d say, ‘That’s what I want to be when I grow up.’” Sure enough, fate tossed Cano and cakes in the same mixing bowl. Since 1989, Cano has owned Pretty Cakes at 5211 Pecos St. in Denver. She employs five and includes Baby Doe’s, Brittany Hill, Weberg’s, Brewski’s and Arapahoe Junction in her major accounts.

Married at 16 and divorced at 19, Cano was on welfare for six years because she had two children to support. During that time, she went to Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver and earned a certificate in cake decorating. She also studied psychology and mechanical drafting, and worked drawing maps. When that job ended, Cano decided to pursue her first love: cakes.

Cano was hired by a Denver custom-cake company, but after a year she had differences with the owner and left. “By working with her [however] I got to see how to run a business,” Cano says. “I spent a year working on a business plan. I got instructions from SBA (Small Business Administration) and I went to the library. I researched everything—even the cost of a bag of flour.”

With Support from the Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, she obtained a $5,000 loan from the Greater Local Development Corp. and was on her way to success.
