World Study Founded on Owners’ Expertise

When Margarita B. Tonkinson and Steve J. Lettieri were downsized from their jobs at the University of Miami’s international programs office, it took them three months to get back on their feet. But once they did, they soared, literally, into one of the most successful private Latin American study abroad programs available called World Study.
“When this happens, you’re concerned that you’re doing the right thing,” says Tonkinson. “We had questions like ‘When do I go into business?’ and ‘What do I do best?’ and “Do I need to relocate?’”They used resources from the Women’s Business Development Center at Florida International University in Miami to learn how to write business plans, marketing plans and where to get potential funding. Artist Finds Success as Entrepreneur

Donna Mae Montgomery always knew she was talented. She wrote her first poem at age eight and has studied and created art ever since. She’s experimented with photography, ceramics, sculpture and painting. But her best-known work has been in collage; some of the pieces she developed as a member of the Xerox-Mail and Rubber Stamp Artist movements of the 1970s are now in New York’s Whitney Museum. Despite this rich background, it was only recently that Donna Mae found a way of using her talents to become an entrepreneur. An idea for a small business was born several years ago during a visit to a museum book store where she noticed a pin made of shrink-it plastic. Today she creates jewelry from what at first seems an unusual product-photocopied plastic. (more…)

Small Country Store Turned Mini Supermarket

HELENA, MT—Bob’s Valley Market hasn’t always belonged to Pat & Bob Bartmess, but it has been a landmark well known to Helenans and travelers for at least a half a century. The Bartmess family purchased the 900 square foot “shack,” then known as Jerry’s Valley Service, in 1974. The building not only served as a country store and gas station, but also as the Bartmess family residence. Pat Bartmess has over 35 years of retail experience and has managed the store since purchasing it in 1973. She is the president and majority owner of the corporation. Today you will still find Pat opening the store and working behind the cash registers in the early mornings. (more…)
