The following was written by the staff of Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, Inc., based on their experiences with a largely Hispanic clientele, many of whom are recent immigrants, predominantly from Mexico. It is intended for organizations that work with or seek to attract the Hispanic community, especially those that provide business training. Any comments or questions should be directed to Mi Casa.Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, Inc., is a community-based nonprofit organization formed in 1976 to assist primarily low-income Hispanic women and youth gain self-sufficiency through education and employment programs.Mi Casa’s Business Center for Women was opened in 1990 to meet the community’s need for entrepreneurial training. In 1993, the center developed a successful pilot program, Project SUCCESS, for the Denver Department of Social Services. It provided entrepreneurial training plus a life-skills curriculum, individualized assessment, case management, access to capital, and links to other support services for women receiving public assistance.Mi Casa was awarded a grant in 1997 by the U.S. Small Business Administration and became part of its Women’s Business Center Program.In 1998, the program was awarded a Charles Stuart Mott Foundation grant to provide micro-enterprise training to the welfare-to-work population.
